Architects! Climate Action Network Australia

If you’re engaged in Australia’s design and construction industry—whether as a student, a recent graduate, or a seasoned professional—Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN) Australia invites you to join a community committed to systemic, sustainable change. This network is not merely a stepping stone for individual careers but a collective force advocating for environmentally responsible practices in architecture and related fields.

Recognising Australia’s unique landscape, ecological conditions, and First Nations perspectives, we’re challenging outmoded practices. We work to create an atmosphere that welcomes a diverse range of professionals—from architects and landscape architects to ecologists, heritage consultants, urban planners, and sustainability experts. We serve as ambassadors for our planet.

Education is a cornerstone of our initiative. We question how our nation’s 22 architecture schools incorporate climate change and sustainability into their curricula. Early-career architects, students, and graduates are invaluable contributors who can help us establish new priorities beyond mere compliance.

Our No More Gas campaign illustrates our commitment to fossil fuel divestment in new buildings. But our focus also extends to the adaptive reuse and retrofitting of existing structures. Considering the urgency of the ecological crisis, we recognise that more assertive actions—similar to civil disobedience tactics used globally—may soon be needed to deter environmentally damaging demolitions.

Beyond domestic efforts, ACAN Australia participates in international conversations on climate change, especially those organised by bodies like the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Conference of Parties (COP). In these essential discussions, we are contributors, not spectators, synchronising global and local actions to address environmental challenges effectively.

At ACAN Australia, collective action and interdisciplinary cooperation are critical for meaningful change. We cannot act in isolation. Our focus on education prepares architecture schools and students across the country for the next generation of challenges and opportunities in sustainable building. Here, experienced professionals don’t just talk about change; we actively involve you in crafting sustainable practices.

We are part of a larger, global network focused on actionable solutions for a sustainable future. Your skills, insights, and dedication are crucial as we put sustainability at the core of Australia’s architectural landscape.
